Whether the manufacturers software simply refuses to install on Windows 2003 or insists on adding a load of bloatware on your system, here is how to get around it:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1:<\/strong> Start by downloading the basic version of the drivers from the HP website, choose Windows XP drivers if there are none for Windows 2003<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2:<\/strong> Open the executable file, allow it to extract and display the first setup screen. Here, depending on the printer chosen it may let you continue with the setup, or stop the installation there telling you the operating system is not supported.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/james-batchelor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Photosmart-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-185\" src=\"https:\/\/james-batchelor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Photosmart-1-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"Photosmart-1\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Whatever the installation screen displays, DO NOT CLOSE THE WINDOW, while its open all the files you need are made\u00a0available. Next navigate to your temp folder. TIP: Go to Start Menu \u00e0 Run, and type \u00a0%temp%. This will bring up your temp files.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/james-batchelor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Photosmart-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-187\" src=\"https:\/\/james-batchelor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Photosmart-2-300x153.jpg\" alt=\"Photosmart-2\" width=\"300\" height=\"153\" srcset=\"https:\/\/james-batchelor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Photosmart-2-300x153.jpg 300w, https:\/\/james-batchelor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Photosmart-2.jpg 347w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the temp folder, look for a folder containing the setup files that were extracted as part of the installation, it will usually have .inf files that contain the printer model as part of the filename, below is an example of the drivers to install a HP C4700:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_188\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-188\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/james-batchelor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Photosmart-3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-188 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/james-batchelor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Photosmart-3-300x196.png\" alt=\"Photosmart-3\" width=\"300\" height=\"196\" srcset=\"https:\/\/james-batchelor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Photosmart-3-300x196.png 300w, https:\/\/james-batchelor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Photosmart-3.png 957w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-188\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Look for references in the file names that match your printer&#8217;s<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Step 3:<\/strong> At this point its best to copy (not move) the contents of the folder to a more convenient location. When a copy is made, you can close the installation utility as you have all the files in a new location.<\/p>\n<p>Now navigate to Start &gt; Settings &gt; Printers and Faxes, and then start the Add new printer wizard.<\/p>\n<p>After the intro splash, choose \u201cLocal printer attached to this computer\u201d and un-check the box for \u201cAutomatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Note: Step 4 is for installing a printer over a network, if you are connecting via USB, skip to step 5.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Step 4:<\/strong> Click next, on the next screen you will want to select \u201cCreate a new port\u201d and choose \u201cStandard TCP\/IP port\u201d from the drop-down menu, as below:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/james-batchelor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Photosmart-4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-189\" src=\"https:\/\/james-batchelor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Photosmart-4-300x229.png\" alt=\"Photosmart-4\" width=\"300\" height=\"229\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This brings up a new wizard, after the intro splash onto the add port screen, type the IP address of the printer:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/james-batchelor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Photosmart-5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-190\" src=\"https:\/\/james-batchelor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Photosmart-5-300x230.png\" alt=\"Photosmart-5\" width=\"300\" height=\"230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/james-batchelor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Photosmart-5-300x230.png 300w, https:\/\/james-batchelor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Photosmart-5.png 502w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>NOTE: To save reconfiguration in the future, remember to\u00a0set\u00a0the printer to have a static IP address as you are not installing the program that find the printer on a dynamic IP address.<\/p>\n<p>The next screen, leave the settings as a \u201cStandard device type\u201d and \u201cGeneric network card\u201d. Clicking next brings you to printer software screen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 5:<\/strong> Click the \u201cHave Disk\u201d button and navigate to the copy of the installation files.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_191\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-191\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/james-batchelor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Photosmart-6.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-191 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/james-batchelor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Photosmart-6-300x220.png\" alt=\"Photosmart-6\" width=\"300\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/james-batchelor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Photosmart-6-300x220.png 300w, https:\/\/james-batchelor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Photosmart-6.png 563w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-191\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Choose the most generic file name.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Only .inf files show, and you want to choose the most generic file name that is similar to your device, in this case above hpC4700.inf seems the most obvious.<\/p>\n<p>If the right file has been chosen, you see\u00a0your printer display as below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/james-batchelor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Photosmart-7.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-192\" src=\"https:\/\/james-batchelor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Photosmart-7-300x229.png\" alt=\"Photosmart-7\" width=\"300\" height=\"229\" srcset=\"https:\/\/james-batchelor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Photosmart-7-300x229.png 300w, https:\/\/james-batchelor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Photosmart-7.png 503w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you get a warning message about a digital signature, choose \u201cContinue Anyways\u201d,\u00a0but make sure you downloaded the drivers from a reputable site, such as the official HP website.<\/p>\n<p>The installation wizards copies the files, then choose to print a test page to make sure all is well, and your HP printer appears in your printers folder.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/james-batchelor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Photosmart-8.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-193\" src=\"https:\/\/james-batchelor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Photosmart-8-300x133.png\" alt=\"Photosmart-8\" width=\"300\" height=\"133\" srcset=\"https:\/\/james-batchelor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Photosmart-8-300x133.png 300w, https:\/\/james-batchelor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Photosmart-8.png 466w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Connecting a printer to a server compared to a desktop system is not as straight forward as it may be perceived.
